I am a huge guitar enthusiast and I own over 6 guitars. I usually am not affected by guitar ads because I am very brand loyal to ESP, and will only buy ESP guitars. But recently since I have gotten into advertising, I have began to look at ads for other guitar companies, and now I am not as brand loyal to ESP and I'm thinking about buying some other guitars because of their great advertising!

This goes too far in advertising
I was looking for some bad ads online earlier this morning, and I came across an ad made by the Montana Meth Project. It has a guy on top of a girl who looks badly beaten, with the quote "15 bucks for sex isn't normal, but on meth it is".
I think the Montana Meth project took it way to far with this one. It is way too graphic and I think a lot of people would be turned off by this because it is showing a man having sexual intercourse with a women for money. I think it was dumb that this ad was created because in a lot of places, like Canada, with strict advertising regulations, this ad would definitely not be allowed to run, especially on a billboard. I understand how this ad could be effective for some people because it uses scare tactics and shows what really happens when you're addicted to meth. But all in all, this ad really just doesn't "do it" for me, and I think most would agree.

Leo Burnett
The other night I was researching work from some of the most famous creative directors in the advertising industry. I came across a man named Leo Burnett.
I really liked his advertising techniques. He decided to use a soft sell approach in most of his ads to help build up brand equity. Soft sell advertising is much more casual than hard sell advertising, where in hard sell it is just telling you straight out to buy the product. Soft sell I feel is much more persuasive because it outlines all the positives of the what is being sold, and can be much less irritating. One of Leo Burnett's quotes was "Make it simple. Make it memorable. Make it inviting to look at. Make it fun to read.". I think this quote is great and it is something that I want to follow when creating great ads. Leo Burnett had led some great advertising campaigns in the 1930's to 1960's for some huge companies such as Kellogs, General Motors, Allstate and Pillsbury. He also created many great characters that we still see around today such as Tony the Tiger, Jolly Green Giant and the Pillsbury Doughboy.
Below I have posted some of Leo Burnett's work for all to see, I think that all of these ads are just great!

Used car dealership advertisements... Wow
In the morning I often like to read the Toronto Sun on the bus while on the way to school. In this paper, I always see a handful of poor ineffective ads that don't work. But by a long shot the worst ads I have seen in newspapers are advertisements for used car dealerships. I really feel like they are an assault on us. I think that the fonts and layouts are just terrible. I have posted a few really poor ones below.
I really don't like how these companies used so many different fonts in their ads, it just makes everything look messy. I think that it is just best to use one or two fonts in an advertisement. After looking at some really brutal print used car dealership ads, I decided to check out some videos for dealerships on YouTube. I was surprised that it was even worse, the script, voice acting and production quality was just terrible. I think the only thing it can do is just annoy someone. I posted the commercial that I thought was worst below.
I don't understand why so many used car dealerships make ads like this. I realize that it may cost more money to produce something better but I definitely think it would be worth it. Looking at these ads just makes me never want to buy a car from one of these places because it looks so unprofessional.

Stuff like this amazes me!
I am a really big football fan. Last year I was watching the Superbowl, and I always love to see the great commercials. Surprisingly my favorite ad form last years Superbowl wasn't even a commercial it, was a Tweet by Oreo Cookies. As I'm sure most of you remember there was a 45 minute power outage during the Superbowl at the New Orleans Super dome. Oreo capitalized on this situation by quickly tweeting an advertisement saying "You can still dunk in the dark".

I think that ad is extremely clever, and I think that it is amazing how they managed to design and get an advertisement out like this so quick. The ad was posted about 15 minutes before the lights came back on. As a result, this post was re-tweeted over 10,000 times in the first hour. Many had thought that this ad was more effective than Oreo's actual Superbowl commercial which costed millions of dollars. This just goes to show you how effective social media and quick thinking can be in the advertising world. Great stuff!!

Hi there, my name is Michael and I am a 20 year old student in the Advertising program at Sheridan College in Oakville. So far I have really enjoyed the program. Last year I was in the Computer Programming program at Sheridan and it really wasn't for me. I am very glad that have been accepted into Advertising. I think that I am a creative thinker and can really come up with some big ideas. I think that after I have graduated from the program I would like to go into the business side of advertising rather than creative. Below you will see a photo of me.
I am really into almost every type of music, and I play guitar in a few bands. I would really like to work in a large advertising agency in Toronto, possibly creating ads for different bands and instruments. I have decided to a start blog to share my ideas of good and bad advertisements.
